About us

Features and benefits

Children's Memorial is building a new, state-of-the-art facility - Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago - to provide highly specialized care for children in a family-centered environment. The facility will include the latest innovations in medical care and technology, enhanced clinical programs, advanced research directly affecting children and family amenities.

Strengthened leading-edge programs

  • The 36-room Regenstein Cardiac Care Unit combines intensive care experience and technology with acute care family amenities to allow patients to remain in the same room with the same caregivers from admission to discharge.
  • Our enhanced neurocritical care program is one of the first in the nation to offer specialized clinical care, training and research in this emerging field.
  • Lurie Children's will feature the only program in the world that currently addresses the revolutionary discipline of pediatric autonomic medicine, providing enhanced space to study and treat abnormalities in systems that regulate breathing, heart rate, temperature and other related processes.

Expanded trauma care capabilities

Our emergency department will increase from 25 to 45 beds to better respond to regional demands. It will include three trauma/procedure rooms, four nurse triage rooms two diagnostic radiology rooms and one dedicated CT scanner.

Private rooms

All 288 licensed inpatient beds will be private, including the neonatal intensive care unit. Private rooms help control infection and reduce noise, both of which have been proven to speed healing.

Family amenities

Inpatient unit design will make it more convenient for families to visit and remain together during treatment. Enhanced amenities for families include sleeping rooms, in-room showers, Internet access, and shared kitchen, dining and respite spaces.

Enhanced research

Space for greater number of pediatric researchers on the downtown campus of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will present new opportunities for scientific collaboration. Lurie Children's will include a clinical research center to expedite discoveries from the lab to the patient bedside.

Advanced technology

Flexible design and greater space will allow us to accommodate new equipment and technology such as a PET/CT scanner, important for evaluating the success of neurosurgery and chemotherapy, and an intra-operative MRI. Each of the 21 operating/procedure rooms will be equipped for advanced minimally invasive surgery, along with an additional five rooms for other special procedures.

Creative interiors

Chicago's premier arts, cultural and civic institutions are helping us design unique healing environments that promote education and discovery. Life-size model whales, donated by the Shedd Aquarium, will set the stage for the first floor's nautical theme.

Crown Sky Garden

The 5,000-square-foot sky garden, a unique activity and respite area, will include a transluscent interactive light wall that changes color as children approach.
