Children's Memorial Hospital: Serving our communities

President and CEO, Patrick Magoon, explains how we invest in the community through patient care, research, education and advocacy. Watch video »

Children are our most precious resource. Children embody the future, and by investing in their health and well-being, we impact the quality of their future in the most positive and direct way.  For more than 125 years, Children’s Memorial Hospital has been privileged to serve the community by providing state of the art and accessible medical care to all children.  These children come from throughout Illinois, the region and the nation to seek cures and treatment for pediatric diseases and injuries. These endeavors involve the integrated expertise of more than 70 pediatric subspecialties.

In our 2009 fiscal year, Children’s Memorial and affiliated organizations provided nearly $96 million in direct community benefits, including:

  • Charity care, losses due to Medicaid reimbursement below cost of services and other uncompensated costs ($65,832,624)
  • Resident and fellow training ($14,030,739)
  • Language assistance services, pastoral care, social work, art and music therapies, hospital volunteer services, transplant patient family housing and other family support services ($7,597,630)
  • Research funding ($4,647,582)
  • Community clinic support ($3,215,917)
  • Child advocacy programs ($643,588)

Children’s Memorial is the State of Illinois’ primary partner in providing health care to Medicaid-eligible children. Since the All Kids program was initiated, Children’s Memorial has experienced an unprecedented 9.5 percent growth in outpatient Medicaid utilization, as well as 20% growth in inpatient Medicaid utilization.   In total, during the State's 2009 fiscal year, Children's Memorial provided approximately 59% more outpatient and inpatient Medicaid services than the next highest Illinois hospital.  However, during our 2009 fiscal year, Children’s Memorial Hospital was reimbursed $40 million less than the cost of providing services to children covered by the Medicaid program, and our doctors were reimbursed $31 million less than it cost them to care for children insured by Medicaid.

We are grateful to all those who collaborate with us to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential. They include our precious patients and their families, elected and appointed officials, community leaders, donors, volunteers, doctors, nurses and other caregivers.  We are eager to continue working together to alleviate suffering and give hope to children and families now and for generations to come

Sincerely,

Patrick M. Magoon
President and CEO
